The TE Connectivity Macro Sensors GSA 750 series of short range spring loaded position sensors were developed for cost sensitive applications requiring LVDT reliability and performance. Available in ranges of ±0.10 inches to ±0.30 inches, these sensors offer the excellent measurement capabilities of an LVDT at very economical prices.
This makes GSA 750 series LVDTs especially attractive for student projects, low over-head machine and fabrication shops, and R & D laboratories on a limited budget.
GSA 750 series sensors have a stainless steel housing and probe shaft, but utilize nylon sleeve bearings and an external helical spring to reduce costs. The LVDT's probe shaft accepts interchangeable AGD contact tips and is supplied with a number 9 hardened tip. The LVDT's body is encapsulated with epoxy to meet IEC IP-62 sealing requirements and magnetically shielded to reduce effects from external AC fields.

Compact, Spring-Loaded LVDT for Cost-Effective Short Range Measurement
The GSA-750 Series AC LVDT Position Sensor is a compact, spring-loaded linear position sensor designed to provide reliable and repeatable measurement performance in cost-sensitive industrial and laboratory applications. Manufactured by Macro Sensors and distributed by Harold G. Schaevitz Industries (HGSI), this sensor combines proven LVDT technology with a simplified, rugged mechanical design to deliver accurate short-range position measurement at an economical price point.
With measurement ranges from ±0.100 inches to ±0.300 inches, the GSA-750 Series is ideal for dimensional gaging, inspection systems, and precision displacement measurement where dependable performance and affordability are equally important.
Cost-Effective LVDT Performance
The GSA-750 Series was developed specifically for applications where budget constraints are a factor but measurement reliability cannot be compromised.
As noted in the datasheet, this series provides the excellent measurement capabilities of an LVDT at a very economical cost, making it well suited for:
Academic and research projects
Machine shops and fabrication environments
Test fixtures and measurement systems
OEM equipment requiring cost-effective position feedback
Proven AC LVDT Technology
The GSA-750 utilizes Linear Variable Differential Transformer (LVDT) technology, a well-established method for precision position measurement.
An LVDT operates by converting linear motion into a proportional electrical signal using electromagnetic coupling. Because the sensing element is non-contact electrically, there are no sliding contacts or wipers to wear out over time. This results in:
Excellent repeatability
Long operational life
Stable performance over millions of cycles
Spring-Loaded Design for Simple Installation
The GSA-750 features a spring-loaded probe assembly that maintains consistent contact with the measured surface.
This design provides several advantages:
Simplifies mechanical installation
Eliminates the need for complex linkages
Ensures consistent measurement contact
The probe includes an external helical spring and is guided by internal sleeve bearings for smooth operation.
Short Range Measurement Options
The GSA-750 Series is available in three standard measurement ranges:
±0.100 inches (±2.5 mm)
±0.200 inches (±5.0 mm)
±0.300 inches (±7.5 mm)
These short stroke ranges make the sensor ideal for:
Precision dimensional measurement
Small displacement monitoring
Gaging and inspection applications
Reliable Accuracy and Linearity
The GSA-750 provides dependable measurement performance for a wide range of applications:
Non-linearity: Less than ±0.5% of full range output (FRO)
This level of accuracy is well suited for medium-precision industrial measurement tasks where consistency and repeatability are critical.
Compact and Durable Construction
Designed for easy integration, the GSA-750 features a compact cylindrical body:
Diameter: 0.75 inches (19 mm)
Stainless steel housing and probe shaft
Lightweight and easy to mount
The internal design uses nylon sleeve bearings to guide the core, providing smooth motion while maintaining a cost-efficient construction.
Interchangeable Contact Tips
The probe shaft is compatible with standard AGD-style contact tips:
Supplied with a hardened No. 9 contact tip
Interchangeable with other AGD-compatible tips
This flexibility allows the sensor to be adapted to different measurement surfaces and applications.
Environmental Protection and Magnetic Shielding
The GSA-750 is built for reliable operation in industrial environments:
Sealing: Epoxy encapsulated
Ingress protection: IEC IP-62
Magnetically shielded to minimize interference from external AC fields
These features help maintain stable performance in environments with electrical noise or contamination.
Wide Operating Temperature Range
The GSA-750 is capable of operating across a broad temperature range:
Operating temperature: –20°F to +220°F (–30°C to +105°C)
This makes it suitable for both laboratory and industrial use.
Shock and Vibration Resistance
The sensor is designed to withstand demanding conditions:
Vibration: Up to 20 g (up to 2 kHz)
Shock: Up to 100 g for 11 ms
These characteristics allow it to perform reliably in dynamic environments.
AC LVDT Operation and Signal Conditioning
The GSA-750 is an AC-operated LVDT, meaning it requires an external signal conditioner.
Typical operating characteristics include:
Excitation voltage: ~3.0 Vrms
Excitation frequency: 2.5 to 3.0 kHz
The signal conditioner performs several functions:
Provides AC excitation to the sensor
Demodulates the output signal
Converts it into a usable DC voltage or current
Common output formats include:
±10 VDC
0–10 VDC
4–20 mA
This flexible architecture allows the sensor to be integrated into a wide range of control and data acquisition systems.
Typical Applications
The GSA-750 Series is ideal for:
Dimensional gaging and inspection
Short-range displacement measurement
Cost-sensitive measurement systems
X-Y positioning stages
Laboratory and R&D testing
Its compact size and spring-loaded design make it especially useful in fixtures and automated measurement systems.
Why Choose a Spring-Loaded LVDT?
Spring-loaded LVDTs offer several advantages in measurement applications:
Simplified installation without external linkages
Consistent contact with measured surfaces
