High-Accuracy Surface Temperature Measurement with Secure Threaded Mounting

The SMTS-RTD Miniature Surface Mount Threaded Stud RTD Sensor is a compact, precision-engineered temperature sensor designed for accurate and repeatable surface temperature measurement in industrial, laboratory, and research applications. Featuring a thin-film platinum RTD element and a threaded stud mounting configuration, the SMTS-RTD provides excellent thermal contact, high measurement stability, and reliable long-term performance.

Manufactured in the USA using high-quality materials, this RTD sensor is ideal for applications where precision, durability, and ease of installation are critical.

Designed for Precision Surface Temperature Measurement

The SMTS-RTD is specifically designed for measuring surface temperature through direct mechanical attachment. The threaded stud ensures a secure and repeatable interface between the sensor and the measurement surface, allowing for consistent thermal coupling and improved measurement accuracy.

This makes the SMTS-RTD ideal for:

  • Surface temperature monitoring of machinery and components

  • Laboratory testing and validation

  • Heat transfer and thermal profiling studies

  • Process monitoring and control

By eliminating variability associated with adhesive or clamp-mounted sensors, the SMTS-RTD delivers more consistent and repeatable measurement results.

Thin-Film Platinum RTD Element for High Accuracy

At the core of the SMTS-RTD is a precision thin-film platinum sensing element:

  • PT100 (100 Ω at 0°C) or PT1000 (1000 Ω at 0°C) options

  • Temperature coefficient (α): 0.00385

Platinum RTDs are widely recognized for their:

  • Excellent accuracy and repeatability

  • Long-term stability

  • Predictable and linear response

The SMTS-RTD is built to Class A accuracy, providing:

  • ±0.15°C accuracy

This level of precision makes it well-suited for applications requiring high measurement confidence.

Threaded Stud Design for Secure Installation

The SMTS-RTD features a miniature threaded stud mounting configuration, allowing for easy installation into tapped holes or threaded fittings.

Available thread sizes include:

  • #6-32

  • #8-32

  • #10-32

  • 1/4"-20

  • M4 x 0.7

This design provides:

  • Secure mechanical attachment

  • Consistent thermal contact

  • Reduced measurement variability

  • Reliable long-term performance

Threaded mounting is particularly advantageous in applications where vibration, movement, or repeated measurements are present.

Rugged Stainless Steel Construction

The SMTS-RTD is built with a durable stainless steel hex fitting:

  • Material: 316 stainless steel

This construction provides:

  • Excellent corrosion resistance

  • High mechanical strength

  • Compatibility with harsh industrial environments

The rugged design ensures dependable operation even in demanding conditions.

Wide Operating Temperature Range

The SMTS-RTD is designed for moderate temperature surface measurement applications:

  • Temperature range: –58°F to 400°F (–50°C to 204°C)

This range makes it suitable for:

  • Industrial equipment monitoring

  • Laboratory environments

  • Process temperature measurement

Stable and Predictable Performance

RTDs are known for their stability over time, and the SMTS-RTD is no exception. Its thin-film platinum element ensures:

  • Minimal drift over time

  • Consistent measurement accuracy

  • Reliable long-term operation

This makes it a preferred choice for applications where calibration stability is critical.

Fast and Consistent Response

The SMTS-RTD offers a defined response time suitable for surface measurement applications:

  • Time constant: 6 seconds (63.2% response to a step change)

This provides a balance between responsiveness and measurement stability, ensuring accurate tracking of temperature changes.

Flexible Lead Wire Options

The sensor is supplied with high-quality lead wires designed for durability and flexibility:

  • Wire type: 26 AWG stranded conductors

  • Insulation: PFA Teflon

PFA insulation offers:

  • Excellent temperature resistance

  • Chemical resistance

  • Flexibility for routing in tight spaces

2-Wire or 3-Wire Configurations

The SMTS-RTD is available in multiple wiring configurations:

  • 2-wire configuration: Simple installation for basic applications

  • 3-wire configuration: Improved accuracy by compensating for lead wire resistance

The 3-wire option is commonly used in precision applications where measurement accuracy is critical.

Optional Connector Configurations

The SMTS-RTD can be configured with different connection options to suit system requirements:

  • No connector (bare leads)

  • Female mini-jack

  • Male mini-plug

This flexibility allows for easy integration with instrumentation and data acquisition systems.

IP64 Rated for Industrial Environments

The SMTS-RTD is designed to operate reliably in industrial settings:

  • Ingress protection rating: IP64

This provides protection against dust and splashing water, making it suitable for a wide range of environments.

Typical Applications

The SMTS-RTD Miniature Surface Mount RTD Sensor is ideal for:

  • Surface temperature measurement on machinery

  • Industrial process monitoring

  • Laboratory and R&D testing

  • Equipment validation and diagnostics

  • Thermal performance analysis

Its compact design and secure mounting make it particularly useful in confined or high-vibration environments.

Why Choose an RTD for Surface Measurement?

RTDs offer several advantages over thermocouples in certain applications:

  • Higher accuracy

  • Better long-term stability

  • More linear output

  • Reduced drift over time

The SMTS-RTD combines these benefits with a secure mounting design for reliable surface measurement.
