Fast-Response Surface Temperature Measurement with Flexible Mounting Options

The SMBD-RTD Surface Mount Bolt-Down or Cement-On RTD Sensor is a compact, high-accuracy temperature sensor designed for reliable surface temperature measurement in industrial, laboratory, and research environments. Featuring a thin-film platinum RTD element and a low-mass aluminum housing, this sensor delivers fast thermal response, excellent accuracy, and consistent performance across a wide range of applications.

Manufactured in the USA using high-quality materials, the SMBD-RTD is ideal for applications where precise surface temperature measurement and flexible mounting options are required.

Designed for Accurate Surface Temperature Measurement

The SMBD-RTD is specifically engineered to measure temperature directly at the surface of a component. Its compact profile and direct-contact design ensure efficient thermal coupling, allowing for accurate and repeatable readings.

This makes it ideal for:

  • Surface temperature monitoring of machinery and equipment

  • Thermal testing and validation

  • Heat transfer analysis

  • Industrial process monitoring

By mounting directly to the measurement surface, the SMBD-RTD minimizes thermal lag and improves measurement reliability.

Bolt-Down or Cement-On Mounting Flexibility

The SMBD-RTD offers two versatile mounting options:

  • Bolt-down installation: Securely fasten the sensor using a #4 screw through the integrated mounting hole

  • Cement-on installation: Attach the sensor using thermal adhesive for applications where drilling is not practical

The datasheet diagram on page 1 highlights the compact mounting footprint and hole size (Ø 0.113 inches), allowing for easy integration into a wide range of applications.

This dual mounting capability provides flexibility for both permanent installations and temporary testing setups.

Thin-Film Platinum RTD Element for High Accuracy

At the core of the SMBD-RTD is a precision thin-film platinum sensing element:

  • PT100 (100 Ω at 0°C) or PT1000 (1000 Ω at 0°C)

  • Temperature coefficient (α): 0.00385

Platinum RTDs are known for their:

  • High accuracy and repeatability

  • Excellent long-term stability

  • Linear and predictable response

The SMBD-RTD is built to Class A accuracy, providing:

  • ±0.15°C accuracy

This ensures reliable and precise temperature measurement in critical applications.

Aluminum Housing for Fast Thermal Response

The sensor features a lightweight aluminum housing designed to enhance thermal response:

  • Material: Aluminum

  • Low thermal mass for rapid heat transfer

  • Improved responsiveness to temperature changes

This design allows the SMBD-RTD to quickly detect temperature fluctuations, making it well-suited for dynamic measurement applications.

Wide Operating Temperature Range

The SMBD-RTD is designed to operate across a broad temperature range:

  • Temperature range: –58°F to 400°F (–50°C to 204°C)

This makes it suitable for a wide variety of industrial and laboratory environments.

Fast and Reliable Response

The SMBD-RTD provides a predictable response time:

  • Time constant: 6 seconds (63.2% response to a step change)

This response time strikes a balance between speed and stability, ensuring accurate tracking of surface temperature changes.

Durable and Lightweight Design

The compact and lightweight design of the SMBD-RTD allows it to be installed in space-constrained environments without adding significant mass to the measurement surface.

Key benefits include:

  • Minimal thermal disturbance to the measured surface

  • Easy integration into existing systems

  • Reduced mechanical stress on mounting points

Flexible Wiring Options

The SMBD-RTD is available with flexible wiring configurations to suit different measurement requirements:

  • 2-wire configuration: Simple and cost-effective

  • 3-wire configuration: Improved accuracy through lead resistance compensation

The sensor uses:

  • 26 AWG stranded conductors

  • PFA Teflon insulation

PFA insulation provides excellent resistance to heat, chemicals, and mechanical stress, ensuring long-term reliability.

Multiple Cable Length Options

To accommodate various installation requirements, the SMBD-RTD is available with multiple cable lengths:

  • 36 inches

  • 72 inches

  • 180 inches

This flexibility allows the sensor to be easily integrated into both compact and large systems.

Optional Connector Configurations

The SMBD-RTD can be supplied with different connector options for easy integration:

  • No connector (bare leads)

  • Female mini-jack

  • Male mini-plug

This ensures compatibility with a wide range of instrumentation and data acquisition systems.

IP64 Rated for Industrial Environments

The SMBD-RTD is designed to withstand typical industrial conditions:

  • Ingress protection rating: IP64

This provides protection against dust and splashing water, making the sensor suitable for many industrial environments.

Typical Applications

The SMBD-RTD Surface Mount RTD Sensor is ideal for:

  • Industrial equipment temperature monitoring

  • Laboratory and R&D testing

  • Thermal profiling and validation

  • Surface temperature measurement in HVAC systems
