The TE Connectivity Macro Sensors’ DC 750 Series of 3/4 inch (19 mm) DC-operated LVDTs are designed for a wide range of position measurement applications. They use built-in electronics to provide the desirable features of an AC-LVDT, such as frictionless operation and dynamic response, with the added convenience and simplicity of DC input and precalibrated DC output. They are designed to operate in conjunction with PLCs, digital indicators, A/D converters, computer-based data processors, and QC data collection systems.

The DC 750 Series offers nine standard ranges from ±0.050 inch (±1.25 mm) to ±10 inches (±250 mm). The maximum linearity error for a DC 750 Series sensor is ±0.25% of full range output using a statistically best-fit straight line derived by the least squares method.

DC 750 Series sensors provide highly reliable, contactless operation with the high resolution, excellent repeatability, and low hysteresis associated with LVDT technology. Their exceptional reliability is a result of manufacturing processes and assembly techniques developed and optimized by Macro Sensors over many years of manufacturing LVDT sensors. Their stainless steel housings act as magnetic shields to reduce the effects of external AC magnetic fields, and their sealing meets IEC standard IP-62.

DC-Operated Linear Position Sensor with Integrated Electronics for Industrial Measurement Applications

The DC-750 TE Macro Sensors DC LVDT from Harold G Schaevitz Industries (HGSI) is a rugged, high-performance linear position sensor designed for a wide range of industrial, laboratory, and automation applications. As part of the DC 750 Series of DC-operated LVDTs, this sensor combines the proven accuracy and reliability of traditional AC LVDT technology with the simplicity and convenience of integrated DC electronics.

With built-in signal conditioning, the DC-750 TE provides a pre-calibrated DC output, eliminating the need for external signal conditioners. This simplifies installation, reduces system complexity, and improves overall reliability. The sensor is designed for direct interface with PLCs, digital indicators, A/D converters, and computer-based data acquisition systems, making it an ideal solution for modern control and monitoring environments.

Integrated DC LVDT Technology

The DC-750 TE operates as a DC LVDT, meaning that all necessary excitation, demodulation, and signal conditioning electronics are integrated within the sensor housing. This allows the sensor to deliver the desirable characteristics of an AC LVDT—such as frictionless operation and fast dynamic response—while providing the ease of use associated with DC-powered devices.

Key electrical characteristics include:

  • Input power: ±15 VDC (nominal)

  • Output signal: 0 to ±10 VDC

  • Low output noise and ripple: <10 mV rms

Because the output is pre-calibrated, the DC-750 TE can be connected directly to control systems without requiring additional signal conditioning or complex setup procedures.

Wide Range of Measurement Options

The DC-750 Series offers nine standard measurement ranges to accommodate a broad range of applications:

  • ±0.050 inches (±1.25 mm)

  • ±0.125 inches (±3.0 mm)

  • ±0.250 inches (±6.3 mm)

  • ±0.500 inches (±12.5 mm)

  • ±1.00 inch (±25 mm)

  • ±2.00 inches (±50 mm)

  • ±3.00 inches (±75 mm)

  • ±5.00 inches (±125 mm)

  • ±10.00 inches (±250 mm)

This wide range of available stroke lengths allows engineers to select a sensor that closely matches their application requirements, ensuring optimal resolution and measurement performance.

Non-Contact LVDT Measurement Principle

At the core of the DC-750 TE is LVDT technology, which operates using a non-contact electromagnetic measurement principle. The sensor consists of a movable ferromagnetic core that travels within a coil assembly without making physical contact.

This design offers several key advantages:

  • No mechanical wear of internal sensing components

  • Virtually unlimited operational life

  • Stable performance over millions of cycles

  • High reliability in continuous-use applications

Because there are no sliding electrical contacts, the sensor maintains consistent performance over time without signal degradation.

High Accuracy and Repeatability

The DC-750 TE is engineered to provide accurate and repeatable measurements in demanding applications:

  • Linearity: ≤ ±0.25% of full range output

  • Repeatability: < 0.01% of full scale

  • Hysteresis: < 0.01% of full scale

These performance characteristics ensure reliable and consistent data, which is essential for applications such as process control, testing, and automated inspection.

The sensor also features a fast response time with a frequency response of approximately 250 Hz, enabling accurate tracking of dynamic motion.

Rugged Stainless Steel Construction

The DC-750 TE is built for durability in industrial environments. Its stainless steel housing provides both mechanical protection and electromagnetic shielding.

Key construction features include:

  • Industry-standard 3/4 inch (19 mm) diameter housing

  • Stainless steel body for corrosion resistance

  • Magnetic shielding to reduce interference from external AC fields

  • Environmental sealing to IEC IP-62 standards

This rugged design allows the sensor to perform reliably in environments where exposure to dust, vibration, and electrical noise is common.

Environmental Performance

The DC-750 TE is designed to operate across a wide range of environmental conditions:

  • Operating temperature: 0°F to +160°F (–20°C to +70°C)

  • Vibration tolerance: 20g up to 2 kHz

  • Shock survival: 100g for 11 ms

The sensor also features a low thermal coefficient of scale factor, helping maintain measurement accuracy even as temperature conditions change.

Flexible Mounting and Configuration Options

The DC-750 TE is designed for easy integration into a wide variety of systems. Optional features and configurations include:

  • Metric threaded cores

  • Teflon® bore liners for reduced friction

  • Core extension rods for mechanical flexibility

  • Mounting accessories and hardware

These options allow users to tailor the sensor to their specific mechanical and environmental requirements.

Electrical Integration and System Compatibility

With its integrated DC output, the DC-750 TE can be easily connected to a variety of industrial and laboratory systems, including:

  • PLCs and industrial controllers

  • Digital panel meters and indicators

  • Data acquisition systems

  • Computer-based monitoring systems

The sensor’s low noise output and stable signal characteristics ensure reliable performance even in electrically noisy environments.

Typical Applications

The DC-750 TE is well suited for a wide range of position measurement applications, including:

  • Machine tool positioning systems

  • Hydraulic cylinder position feedback

  • Valve position sensing

  • Materials testing and extensometers

  • Automated assembly equipment

Its combination of accuracy, durability, and ease of integration makes it a versatile solution across multiple industries.

Why Choose a DC LVDT?

DC LVDTs like the DC-750 TE offer several advantages over traditional AC LVDT systems:

  • Integrated electronics eliminate external signal conditioners

  • Simplified wiring and installation

  • Pre-calibrated output reduces setup time

  • Direct compatibility with modern control systems

At the same time, they retain the core benefits of LVDT technology, including non-contact operation, high reliability, and long service life.

Summary

The DC-750 TE Macro Sensors DC LVDT provides a reliable, accurate, and easy-to-integrate solution for linear position measurement. By combining non-contact LVDT sensing with integrated DC electronics, it delivers precise, repeatable measurements while simplifying system design.

With its wide range of measurement options, rugged stainless steel construction, and compatibility with industrial control systems, the DC-750 TE is an excellent choice for engineers seeking dependable performance in demanding applications.
