The TE Connectivity Macro Sensors GHSD 750 Series of 3/4 inch diameter spring-loaded DC-LVDTs are designed for a wide range of position measurement and dimensional gaging applications. These rugged hermetically sealed sensors are constructed entirely of stainless steel and intended for general industrial use. The coil windings are sealed against hostile environments to IEC standard IP-68. Electrical termination is through a sealed axial connector; the mating connector plug is supplied with a unit.
The sensor consists of a spring loaded shaft running in a precision sleeve bearing and connected to the core of an LVDT. The use of a precision sleeve bearing results in measurement repeatability of 0.000025 inches (0.6 µm) or better. The probe shaft is fully extended by a spring exerting a nominal force of 6 to 20 ounces depending upon total range. The contact tip supplied is an AGD standard number 9 made from chrome plated hardened tool steel. It is fully interchangeable with other AGD contact tips.
Built-in electronics result in position sensors that operate from a DC input and generate a precalibrated DC output. The output from the GHSD 750 Series is designed to operate with many PLCs, digital indicators, A/D converters, computer-based data processors, and QC data collection systems.
Available in ranges of ±0.050 inch (±1.25 mm) to ±2.00 inches (±50.0 mm), the maximum linearity error for a GHSD 750 Series sensor is ±0.25% of full range output using a statistically best-fit straight line derived by the least squares method.

Spring-Loaded DC-Output Linear Variable Differential Transformer for Industrial Gauging and Position Measurement
The GHSD-750-TE DC LVDT from Macro Sensors, distributed by Harold G. Schaevitz Industries (HGSI), is a rugged, spring-loaded linear position sensor engineered for precision displacement measurement and dimensional gaging in industrial environments. By combining proven Linear Variable Differential Transformer (LVDT) technology with integrated signal conditioning electronics, this sensor delivers accurate, repeatable position feedback in a compact and easy-to-install package.
Unlike traditional AC-operated LVDTs that require external electronics, the GHSD-750-TE incorporates built-in signal conditioning to provide a pre-calibrated DC output. This simplifies system integration, reduces installation complexity, and minimizes the number of components required in the measurement system.
The GHSD-750 Series is available in a wide range of measurement strokes, from ±0.020 inches up to ±2.00 inches, making it suitable for both fine-resolution gaging and broader displacement measurement applications.
Integrated DC Output for Simplified System Integration
One of the key advantages of the GHSD-750-TE is its internal signal conditioning circuitry. The sensor operates as a DC-LVDT, meaning that all necessary electronics for excitation, demodulation, and signal scaling are contained within the sensor body.
The internal electronics perform several critical functions:
Provide stable AC excitation to the primary winding
Process the differential AC signal from the secondary windings
Demodulate the signal to determine both magnitude and direction of displacement
Output a calibrated DC voltage signal proportional to position
This results in a sensor that can be directly connected to:
PLC analog inputs
Digital indicators and panel meters
Data acquisition systems
Computer-based measurement platforms
The standard output of 0 to ±10 VDC allows for straightforward integration without the need for external signal conditioners or additional calibration steps.
Spring-Loaded Design for Reliable Contact Measurement
The GHSD-750-TE features a spring-loaded probe shaft that maintains consistent contact with the measured surface. This design is especially beneficial in gaging and inspection applications where reliable contact is required for accurate measurements.
The probe shaft is guided by a precision sleeve bearing and connected directly to the LVDT core. The internal spring applies a controlled force—typically between 6 and 20 ounces depending on the measurement range—ensuring stable contact without introducing excessive load on the measured component.
This configuration provides several advantages:
Consistent measurement contact across repeated cycles
Reduced mechanical complexity compared to linkage-based systems
Improved repeatability in automated measurement processes
High Accuracy and Exceptional Repeatability
In precision measurement applications, repeatability is often more important than absolute accuracy. The GHSD-750-TE excels in both areas, providing:
Repeatability better than 0.01% of full range output
Linearity better than ±0.25% of full range output
This high level of performance ensures that repeated measurements of the same position produce consistent results, which is essential for:
Statistical process control (SPC)
Automated inspection systems
Quality assurance processes
Because the LVDT operates using non-contact electromagnetic principles, there are no sliding electrical contacts or wear surfaces. This eliminates common sources of drift and degradation found in contact-based sensors such as potentiometers.
Rugged, Hermetically Sealed Construction
The GHSD-750-TE is designed for durability in demanding industrial environments. Its construction includes:
Stainless steel housing and probe shaft
Hermetically sealed internal components
Coil windings sealed to IEC IP-68 standards
This robust construction protects the sensor from:
Moisture and humidity
Dust and particulate contamination
Exposure to industrial fluids and debris
The sealed design ensures long-term reliability and consistent performance even in challenging operating conditions.
Flexible Measurement Ranges
The GHSD-750 Series is available in multiple measurement ranges to suit a wide variety of applications:
±0.020 inches (±0.51 mm)
±0.050 inches (±1.25 mm)
±0.125 inches (±3.0 mm)
±0.250 inches (±6.3 mm)
±0.500 inches (±12.5 mm)
±1.00 inch (±25 mm)
±2.00 inches (±50 mm)
This range flexibility allows users to select the optimal sensor for their required measurement resolution and travel.
Standardized Output for Industrial Compatibility
The GHSD-750-TE provides a standardized DC output signal that is compatible with most industrial control systems:
0 to ±10 VDC output (standard)
This output can be easily interpreted by PLCs, data acquisition systems, and digital displays without additional conversion hardware. The factory-calibrated output ensures consistent scaling and eliminates the need for field adjustment.
Flexible Mounting and Installation
The sensor is designed for simple and reliable installation:
1/2-20 UNF threaded mounting body
Supplied hex nuts for secure positioning
Compact 3/4-inch diameter housing
These features allow the GHSD-750-TE to be easily integrated into:
Gaging fixtures
Automated inspection stations
Test equipment and measurement systems
Interchangeable Contact Tip
The GHSD-750-TE is supplied with an AGD standard No. 9 contact tip made from chrome-plated hardened tool steel. This tip is fully interchangeable with other AGD-style contact tips, allowing users to customize the sensor for different surface types or measurement geometries.
Stable Performance Across Operating Conditions
The GHSD-750-TE is designed to maintain consistent performance across a range of environmental conditions:
Operating temperature: 0°F to +160°F (–20°C to +70°C)
Low thermal drift
Resistance to environmental interference
These characteristics ensure reliable operation in manufacturing, laboratory, and field environments.
Typical Applications
The GHSD-750-TE is widely used in:
Industrial gaging systems
Electronic dial indicators
Fabricated metal inspection
Materials testing equipment
Shaft runout (TIR) measurement
Its combination of high repeatability, durability, and ease of integration makes it well suited for both manual and automated measurement systems.
Why Choose a DC LVDT?
DC-LVDTs offer several advantages over traditional AC LVDT systems:
Integrated electronics eliminate external signal conditioners
Simplified wiring and installation
Factory calibration ensures consistent output
Reduced system complexity and cost
The GHSD-750-TE combines these advantages with rugged construction and precision measurement performance.
