What Are the Best Practices for Mounting an LVIT?

Proper installation of an LVIT sensor is essential for achieving accurate measurements, repeatability, and long service life. Below are the key best practices to follow:

1. Use Mounting Blocks for Secure and Accurate Installation

Precision-machined mounting blocks ensure stable, consistent positioning of the LVIT body. They help maintain axial alignment between the sensor and spoiler/target rod, minimizing mechanical stress and alignment errors.

  • Always use split-collar style mounting blocks. These provide even clamping force around the sensor body.
  • Do not use set screws that press directly against the side of the LVIT housing—this can damage the sensor by deforming the housing and can lead to degraded performance.
  • Mounting blocks should be matched to the LVIT’s body diameter and mounting features—either factory-supplied or custom-fabricated.

Acceptable Mounting Block Materials:

  • Aluminum – Lightweight, rigid, and non-ferromagnetic.
  • Brass – Dense, stable, and non-ferromagnetic
  • 300 series stainless steel
  • Plastic composites (e.g., Delrin or Phenolic - link to site) – Suitable for applications where electrical isolation or corrosion resistance is required; ensure the material provides adequate mechanical strength and remains dimensionally stable at the operating temperature

2. Ensure Proper Axial Alignment

  • The spoiler/target rod must move linearly within the sensor bore, with concentricity being of lesser importance.
  • Avoid Lateral or Side Loading on the spoiler/target rod. Misalignment can cause friction, binding, or inaccurate readings.
  • Use linear bearings or external guidance systems if precise spoiler/target rod motion cannot be guaranteed by the mechanical design.
  • Consider applying shrink tubing over the spoiler/target rod to reduce the gap between the spoiler/target rod OD and the bore ID, or use a spring-loaded model if external alignment is not available.

3. Secure Cables and Use Proper Strain Relief

  • Use strain relief at the cable entry to prevent stress or damage.
  • Route cables away from high-voltage sources, motors, and EMI sources.
  • Avoid sharp edges and moving parts that could abrade the cable jacket.

Summary: LVIT Mounting Best Practices
✔ Use split-collar, precision-machined mounting blocks made from non-ferromagnetic materials
✔ Do not use set screws pressing against the housing
✔ Maintain proper axial alignment with no side load
✔ Use proper strain relief and EMI-conscious cable routing
